I figured that the test should be
conducted at the maximum setting of each of the candidates attainable in the SIngapore
Hardware Zone Labs so as not to waste your precious time in speculation.Utilities used are
Wintune98 Version 1.0.25 and Norton System Information Benchmark V3.0.7. Without
further ado, let's set the JP4 and crank up the Bus Speeds. |
|

Candidate 1 : Intel
Pentium II 450 Mhz ( SL2WB 2.0V MALAY) |
Currently, this is the
highest processor speed of the Deschutes. This candidate is here to show you want to
expect with this board with a 1/2 GigaHertz Processor. JP4 is
set as default (1-2 shorted) The candidate is clocked at 504 MHz (112 Mhz x
4.5) using only 2.0V Voltage Core. The multiplier is locked at 4.5 and 133 Mhz x 4.5 is
just too much for the chip to take with only 2.0V |

Candidate 2 : Intel
Pentium II 300 Mhz ( SL2YK 2.0V MALAY) |
After the announcement of the
wide bandwidth of overclocking earilier at our news section, the PII 300 Mhz becomes
the hot favourite overnight. JP4 is set as XFiles Setting (2-3 shorted) The maximum performance setting I could get for this chip with this
mainboard is at 463 Mhz (103 MHz x 4.5) at 2.0V(Mutliplier locked at 4.5) By the way, I
was unable to run the same chip at 463 Mhz on my ABIT BH6. |

Candidate 3 : Intel
Celeron 333 Mhz ( SL32B 2.0V MALAY) |
This chip was correct detected as
333 Mhz showing the following : INTEL(R) CELERON(TM)-MMX 333 MHz
The above
candidate was a let down. With multiplier locked at 5.0, the chances of overclocking it
using 100MHz FSB and above to 500 MHz and beyond are slim. But, there are fellow
overclockers out there that manage to get it up and kicking at 500 MHz. Anyway, in my
scenerio with this chip, JP4 is set
as default (1-2 shorted) I was
only able to clock it at 416 MHz (83 MHz x 5.0). Furthermore, there was something
perculiar. The Uncached Disk Speed drop to an all time low of 0.069 MB/s and there was
lots of activity going on in the hard drive even when moving the mouse. Jereme, our Review
Lab Manager has also reported such strange phenomenon @ 83 MHz with Intel PII and Socket 7
Chips on Gigabyte GA-EA, AOpen BX6, ASUS P5A,etc.Til today this remains a mystery yet to
be solved (May you can help us?) perhaps in another X-Files series. Hee hee. |8-). |

Candidate 4 : Intel
Celeron 300A Mhz ( SL32A 2.0V MALAY) |
This chip was correct detected as
300A Mhz showing the following : INTEL(R) CELERON(TM)-MMX 300A MHz
The above
candidate was looked upon as an overclocker's dream chip and indeed it is. The 300A
processor has obtain an outstanding 463 MHz (103MHz x 4.5) with multipier locked at 4.5.
Therefore, it can be seen that with the updated 2.4 eM BIOS,
P6BX-A+ provides excellent support for the new breed of CELERON CPUs. |

The above simply shows the effects of turning off
the L2 Cache of the new Intel Celeron 300A and 333 MHz and displays the difference between
Intel Pentium II Processors and Intel Celeron Processors. You are not paying for nothing
when you invest in PII CPUs. The above also illustrated that the new Updated BIOS Version 2.4eM is effective in recognizing the new
breed of Celerons. |
