Introduction

DIAMOND came out with the World FIRST PCI sound card.Into their 3rd generation of PCI sound card era, DIAMOND continue to endorsed on A3D technology. This time round, they even went a step further to incoporate the AU-8830 chipset from Aureal into their card. Making it the FIRST release sound card running the much awaited A3D 2.0 technology. So what's the hip and hype behind this chipset? Let us take a in-depth look into this DIAMOND product.

This card is basically a enhanced version of it's MX200 card which carries it's stunning sound force and the forceful package bundled with the card. DIAMOND has so ever generous to bundled some exciting games to show off its ability. MX300 bundling software are of the highest class. And with DIAMOND usual high quality desktop utilities, you will be able to enjoy the function bar and many interesting software DIAMOND have specially selected for you. Wonder how MonsterSound got it's name? Well DIAMOND got the deal with Monster Cable and bundled all their range of Monster Sound cards with the famous Monster cable i.e fully 24k gold-plated connector to ensure richest flow of data.

The Good

In the direct line of competition, DIAMOND shows off the WORLD first A3D 2.0 card with support for 2 line-out function which is similiar to CREATIVE's offering. This means that it will be able to support four speakers surround effect with true surround to the Front left/right and Rear left/right. This stir lots of interest here with this ultimate design. I have personally tested and tried this advance technology and was amazed! DIAMOND MonsterSound MX300 is something special on its own. With the wide DIAMOND support, enjoy world class audio playback with its 320-voice capability which are fully upgradable to more in the near future. Comparing with the Live! and YAMAHA top of the line WaveForce XG, what you get is unparallel quality sound. It is hard to explain but A3D 2.0 is kind of special in it's way when you run the bundled games. Even using the older A3D games like Battle Zone, you can still feel quite a bit of different. A3D 2.0 is so new that the most of the current game titles does not seem to support it. However, I can only foresee it to get BETTER support.

The new DIAMOND card will automatically detect the supported audio format when you start running the game, be it either the near future A3D 2.0 games or the current A3D 1.0 games titles. A superb offering that CREATIVE cannot beat is it's ability to support Environmental Audio Extension (EAX in short) in it's next driver revision. Diamond has added on a connector (supported by the Vortex 2) that will allow the attachment of upgrade cards. A couple of these are currently in the production phase. One being a basic S/PDIF card and another being a full featured digital i/o card (including S/PDIF) that also allows full 5.1 support to the MX300. The MX300 card will auto-detect what is connected to it (along the lines of the MX200) hence simplifying setup (this is not a standard Vortex 2 feature).

The Vortex 2 and hence the MX300 can support EAX in hardware through a driver revision. This is possible as EAX is a reverb API and the Vortex 2 will handle EAX style reverb by doing the computationally intensive tasks of sample rate conversion and mixing in hardware, and the memory intensive task of running the reverb filters and delay lines on the host (using main memory and the host CPU). However, it is likely that this support will not come by until the next revision of the EAX which is being worked on at the Interactive Audio Special Interest Group;

A3D 2.0 will check for A3D 2.0 certified hardware. If it finds it, all A3D 2.0 features will be enabled. If it does not find it, then the features will be scaled down to what the hardware can handle. Games that only support A3D 2.0 will still allow for hardware accelerated 3D positional audio on cards like the Sound Blaster Live! However, my understanding is that A3D 2.0 will not activate any dynamic reverb on the Live.

Changing gears in mid-development is not an easy process so expect games that have been in development for some time to stick to A3D 1.x (eg. Thief: The Dark Project is slated to support A3D 1.x (as well as EAX)). Titles like Half Life and Heretic II will have A3D 2.0 support. However, with any new API, initial support goes through a learning curve at the developer level. This will be true for EAX and A3D 2.0. Early titles like Half Life may only take the A3D 2.0 API and the Vortex 2 hardware to about 50 percent of its limits;

Half Life is slated to have both A3D 2.0 and EAX so we will have a great platform for comparisons. Unreal is also slated to get A3D 2.0 but as we all know EPIC has other priorities right now.

And not forgetting the AC-3 function which were widely spead. Basically, this card allow playback of your AC-3 sound using it's digital I/O function. This is similar to CREATIVE's but is yet to be available.

By allowing the capability of downgrading to work with it's older A3D 1.0 technology. Aureal ensure that the card is fully compatible with older A3D games and majority Direct 3D games titles.

This is especially important as we can still use this card to run the games without any problem. Unlike the Live! which experience some minor problem even with the new games.

This card is SoundBlaster compatible. It supports DirectSound and DirectSound3D in both Windows 95 and 98. It is also compatible to SoundBlaster Pro in Windows DOS box while it supports real DOS mode through PCPO and DDMA.

The Bad

There are a few bad points with this card. First of all, it will be in the expensive price tag of S$190-200+. This will probably make you put the purchase of this card behind the cheaper and older A3D 1.0 PCI sound card. Another bad point is the lack of A3D 2.0 games on the market. The upcoming Half-Life and Heretic 2 will not be arriving any earlier before Christmas. But you might be in for a suprise if Aureal come out with a driver that support EAX now which means that you will be able to enjoy EAX enhanced titles also with this card.

Without the newest games, I was unable to test it's true ability except for using the demo that comes with the card.

Even by the time you read about this review. The card should not have reach Singapore's shore as the US market have already run out of pre-ordered stocks. Guess you might wanna wait a while longer for it.

Conclusion

DIAMOND pack the MX300 in a usual spacious nice looking box with a thin manual and installation disc. Personally, I tested it's ability by running several older A3D games like Battle Zone, Jedi Knight plus the plentiful of Direct 3D games hence confiming of it's backward capability. DOS legacy is still a doubt here but I did not managed to fix the ISA cards with it to try on the quality. Neverthless,if you prefer another name other than CREATIVE and like A3D. Then DIAMOND! MX300 is created with such unique 2 ouput jack that allows you to connect to 4-point speakers similar to CREATIVE's offering, it even goes a step futher by implementing the detection of 4 speakers input when you plug into it's rear line-out jack. DIAMOND MX300 is therefore in a class similar to the SB Live! but with a pricetag of S$100 cheaper plus the future ability to support EAX surround sound, it sure is a soundcard not to be missed. With much richer content and wider range of games support including the older A3D games which you can play with, I would buy this over the Live!. However, if you require a Digital I/O port (available on the LIVE!), then you will have to wait as it will only be available in the near future for this MX300 card. Hence, if you really require the Digital I/O port now, then you might have to chose the LIVE!.
